Workshops

QAIS schools abound with talented teachers who would be available to give workshops in your schools. If you are interested in any of the following topics, contact QAIS. Your school would have to provide substitution costs to the school as well as a fee to be negotiated with the presenter(s).

NEW! The challenge of assessment under the reform (elem. & sec.) (The Study)

The Study has been actively engaged in implementing the new QEP at the secondary level. This workshop addresses the most challenging obstacle in effective implementation ,that is, evaluation or assessment. Teachers and administrators will be provided with the chance to better understand cycle and subject-based competency assessment as relates to the new curriculum. Cross-curricular competencies will also be considered. Ideas will be shared and generated by participants.

Resources are made available to participants in terms of methodology and project planning.

School Based Change (Queen of Angels Academy)

The process of the initial identification of the elements important to the staff of a school as well as possible entry points is provided.

Constructing Knowledge, Collaboration, Unleashing Creativity: Creating Cross-Curricular Multimedia Projects (QAIS)

We live in a multi-media world. Instead of our students just being consumers of this technology we should help them become constructors - to express themselves in the language of their times. Research skills, planning and collaborating are some of the skills developed in creating multimedia projects. Students demonstrate their subject knowledge and increase their technological skills in producing presentations. This session will address how to plan, execute and evaluate a multi-media presentation.

Online Collaboration: Reaching and Teaching beyond Classroom Walls (QAIS)

The computer offers many possibilities for authentic communication. This session will look at a variety of computer uses from international pen pals to software which assists online project planning and collaboration. Students can interact with students around the world to discuss world issues, address problems such as acid rain, and learn about other cultures. There are many opportunities for students to get involved in learning beyond the borders of their classroom.

Integration (Sedbergh School)

Sedbergh School has a unique academic program integrating academic course content, outdoor and environmental education, and personal social development. The Sedbergh program runs vertically through the grades 10 -11- and 12. The goals of the program are twofold: to provide students with a university preparatory academic education, as well as preparing students fo the real challenges of a meaningful and significant personal life. This session will explore the benefits of integration from a horizontal and vertical perspective and discuss the logistical hurdles encountered in integration design within a traditional and departmental schedule.

Turning Science into Stories (Queen of Angels Academy)

Are you looking for an interesting and creative project for your secondary cycle I students? Are you looking for a project which will help build your community of learners? Do you lack the time for building QEP projects properly? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we highly recommend that you come to our session. The project we will share with you was designed for secondary cycle I students with the QEP in mind. The students are required to create a story about an ecosystem of their choice for an elementary school audience. The project, based on science content, is integrated with language arts, visual art, and computer science. We will review the planning process of this project and show you how to develop this style of integrated project within your school. We will also provide cd-roms which contain all the planning sheets we currently use. Student samples will be on hand for viewing.
